Notre Dame has landed a crucial commitment from talented 2027 quarterback Champ Monds, giving the Irish a huge pickup in the class. The 6-2, 225-pound quarterback picked Notre Dame over Ohio State, Florida State and Florida.
Monds was previously a part of the 2028 class, but he reclassified in January. When Notre Dame decided it wanted to add a quarterback in the 2027 class – which came after previous 2027 quarterback Teddy Jarrard reclassified to the 2026 class – Monds was the first player the staff offered. There were other quarterbacks on the board, but it was clear that Monds was the first choice of the coaching staff. Landing him is a huge win for the Irish coaching staff.
Monds is ranked as the No. 208 overall player in the country by ESPN and No. 214 nationally by On3/Rivals. Prior to reclassifying, he was ranked as the No. 2 overall player in the country and the No. 1 quarterback in the 2028 class by On3/Rivals.
As a freshman for Vero Beach, Monds won the starting job and led the Fighting Indians to the state playoffs. Monds passed for 2,234 yards and 23 touchdowns while being picked off just five times in his first season. He completed 67.5-percent of his passes, and four of his five picks were in his first two starts. He had just one interception in the next ten games. Monds also rushed for 502 yards and nine more touchdowns as a freshman.
His sophomore season was limited due to an injury, and the talented signal caller played in just four games. That included the state title game loss to Lake Mary, a game that 2026 quarterback signee Noah Grubbs won with a hail mary at the end of the game. Monds completed 81.4-percent of his passes before going down with an injury, and the Vero Beach offense was averaging 51.3 points per game. He didn't return until the state title game, and he passed for 189 yards and two touchdowns in that performance.
Monds announced he was moving up to the 2027 class almost three weeks after the state title game, which means he'll now be a senior at Vero Beach in 2026.
The Vero Beach standout earned offers from the Irish, Ohio State, Georgia, Alabama, Miami (Fla.), Oregon, Florida State, Florida, Texas A&M, Michigan, Tennessee, Ole Miss, SMU, Auburn, Arkansas, Pittsburgh, Illinois, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, NC State, North Carolina, UCLA, Baylor, Wake Forest, Purdue, West Virginia and Syracuse.
Monds is the 12th player to commit to Notre Dame in the 2027 class. He joins Texas running back Lathan Whisenton, Massachusetts running back Isaiah Rogers, Pennsylvania offensive lineman James Halter, Wisconsin offensive lineman Richie Flanigan, New Jersey defensive end Aidan O'Neil, Florida linebacker Amarri Irvin, North Carolina cornerback Xavier Hasan, Ohio cornerback Ace Alston, Florida safety Zayden Gamble, Florida nickel John Gay III and North Carolina long snapper Sean Kraft.
