The Florida State Seminoles have missed on their top quarterback target.
Four-star quarterback Wonderful ‘Champ’ Monds IV committed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Friday, picking them over the Seminoles and Ohio State Buckeyes, who already have a quarterback committed in their 2027 recruiting class. He announced the news live on The Pat McAfee Show.
While it was expected, it is still a major blow to FSU’s recruiting class, which currently has just six commits. The Seminoles have been recruiting Monds since June 12, 2024, when they offered him a scholarship as a freshman. They were the first major school to offer him, with Notre Dame not extending him one until Jan. 19, 2026.
He visited FSU multiple times during his recruitment, but it was not enough, as the Fighting Irish surged ahead when they hosted him on April 18, his first visit to Notre Dame’s campus. The Seminoles also signed two of his high school teammates last year.
Monds is ranked as the No. 264 overall player and No. 20 quarterback in the 247Sports composite. He is also the No. 24 player from Florida. He was originally a member of the 2028 recruiting class before reclassifying.
It is unclear where FSU will go with Monds off the board. They hosted uncommitted three-star quarterback Logan Flaherty on a visit during the spring, but they have not pushed there. They could also evaluate some other quarterbacks and extend some new offers if they do not think they can pull off a flip, something that will be challenging with their recent struggles.
