Virginia vs Duke Prediction: Who’s Really In the ACC Title Chase?
NCAAF College Football News, Photos, Stats, Scores, Schedule & Videos...
After last weekend, the ACC race is now wide open.
Louisville dropped a thriller to Cal, and Virginia lost quarterback Chandler Morris early against Wake Forest in a tough 16-9 loss. The second one is the biggest, be that was the first ACC loss – the defeat to NC State earlier in the year was technically a non-conference game – and now, Duke has a shot.
Morris is supposed to be back, and if the Cavaliers win this and beat Virginia Tech, it’ll be in the ACC Championship since Pitt and Georgia Tech play each other next week.
Duke has four losses – coming off a rough loss at UConn last week – but three of them were outside of the ACC. It’s only defeat was to Georgia Tech, so if it wins this and beats North Carolina and Wake Forest, it’s in.

Why Virginia Will Win
If Morris really can go, he’s going to throw for lots and lots of yards, because everyone throws for lots and lots of yards against Duke.
The Blue Devils are getting torched, giving up 796 passing yards and five touchdowns over the last two games with one of the nation’s worst pass defenses. Virginia normally doesn’t bomb away, but it can keep up with most attacks in the flow of games.
Duke’s saving grace defensively is its occasional ability to take the ball away in bunches. It has yet to win this year against an FBS team when it wasn’t able to come up with at least one takeaway, and that’s a problem.
Virginia doesn’t turn the ball over. Last week was an exception with Morris hurt, and the only other time it turned it over multiple times was in the wild overtime win over Florida State. But …
Why Duke Will Win
Virginia hasn’t dealt with too many offenses like Duke’s.
Louisville can sling it around, and Florida State can run, and Cal has the next-big-thing quarterback in Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele (just use JKS, everyone else does), but Darian Mensah has been special.
He’s not running, but with 24 touchdowns, just four picks – two came in the loss to UConn last week – and a ground game to take the pressure off, he’s about to have a big day. However …
Virginia vs Duke Prediction, Betting Lines
Every time Duke has had a chance to do something big, it bellyflops.
Whether it was the meltdown loss to Illinois or the loss to a severely flawed Tulane, at home against Georgia Tech, it’s been a struggle when the spotlight is on.
Sure, there was the 46-45 win at Clemson, and winning at Cal was nice, but it doesn’t have the big-moment ability Virginia has in close games.
But is Chandler Morris really okay?
At the moment, he’s supposedly still in the concussion protocol. It’s always gross to factor a college kid’s brain condition into a game preview, so begging all forgiveness here – if he’s able to play and is close to 100%, Virginia will make this a firefight, but … (This might change at the last second.)
