Plenty of people across the country are hyped for the release of Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" — even if they don't recognize the historical irony of it.
With "The Odyssey" releasing nationwide on Friday, July 17, the USC Trojans' social media page posted its own version of the movie poster, featuring its famed Trojan head gear with the caption, "Our Odyssey begins August 29" — referring to the first football game of the 2026 season for the "Men of Troy."

While it looks cool in theory, there is just one problem: "The Odyssey" is based on Odysseus' 10-year journey home to Ithica from the 10-year-long Trojan War — which, infamously, saw the fall of Troy. One of the famed parts of the war was when Odysseus devised a plan to gift Troy the Trojan Horse: a giant wooden horse, which unbeknownst to the Trojans, held Greek soldiers inside. They came out for a surprise attack when it was brought into the city, what ultimately leading to the fall of Troy.
Even worse? USC's first game of the 2026 season is against the Spartans — of San Jose State.
The clear miss by USC resulted in several roasts on social media for the athletic department not understanding the full context of what it posted.

The Trojans had notoriously lost the war against the Greeks before the beginning of The Odyssey.

I love that the Trojans think this is a flex

They know the Odyssey is a story about people trying to get home after winning a war against the Trojans, right? https://t.co/9NanD0wXGW

It's all fun and games until the Michigan State Spartans run their Horse-a-rooski trick play https://t.co/uAroWXAUgQ

Hopefully this isn't a bad omen for the Trojans when it kicks off the season against the Spartans.
