The Michigan football team continues to collect solid recruits, under first-year head coach Kyle Whittingham. The Wolverines got the pledge of four-star offensive lineman Jakari Lipsey, per Rivals. Lipsey is from Michigan, giving Whittingham a big in-state recruit.
“The 6 (foot) 5 300 (pound) OT from Kalamazoo, MI chose the Wolverines over UCLA, LSU, and Tennessee,” Hayes Fawcett posted to X, formerly Twitter.
The four star lineman was also being recruited by other Big Ten programs, including Wisconsin. He is expected to help give depth to the offensive line unit in Whittingham’s 2027 class.
According to Rivals, Michigan currently has the 24th best recruiting class in the country for 2027. The 2026 class is also ranked high, at 11th in the country.
Kyle Whittingham is hoping for much success at Michigan
Michigan is moving on following the firing of former head coach Sherrone Moore. Whittingham coached for many years at Utah, where he led the Utes in the Mountain West, Pac-12 and Big 12.
The head coach now tries his hand at winning in the Big Ten. Michigan football has seen a lot of success over the years, including a national championship under Jim Harbaugh during the 2023 season.
The Wolverines have also seen scandal. Moore was fired after it was discovered that he had an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Harbaugh left following that title season for the NFL, amidst a cloud of scandal due to a sign-stealing investigation.
Whittingham now hopes to turn the page. He had multiple seasons at Utah with at least 10 wins. The last one came in 2025, which was his last campaign with the Utes.
The head coach is fired up and ready to go.
“Didn’t need to see it,” Whittingham said about taking the Michigan job, per USA Today. “Knew what it was, knew the challenge, wanted the challenge.”
Michigan football kicks off the 2026 season with a game against Western Michigan on September 5.
