Michigan lands an impressive 2027 recruit, which caught some off guard. It is also a big victory over a hated Wolverine rival.

The Michigan Wolverines are beginning to ride a wave of recruiting momentum under head coach Kyle Whittingham. That includes victory in the 2027 class on Thursday, landing four-star South Houston (Texas) High School defensive lineman Xavier Muhammad. It was a commitment that took many a bit off guard.

One of the major contenders for Muhammad was Notre Dame, which does appear to have intentions to continue recruiting the Texas native. While the Wolverines were pushing hard for Muhammad, this wasn’t necessarily a move that people saw coming, at least not right now. For the time being, it’s a huge recruiting victory over a hated rival.

Muhammad is now the third defensive lineman committed to the 2027 recruiting class. He joins Recarder Kitchen and Jayce Brewer, which is a really strong start to that group up front. The acquisition of Muhammad is a big one for the Wolverine, providing the flexibility to play either on the edge or on the interior, bringing a ton of versatility to the table.

Now let’s see if they can hold on to Muhammad.

Xavier Muhammad’s recruiting background

Muhammad is considered to be a four-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Muhammad currently sits as the No. 97 overall player, the No. 9 defensive lineman, and the No. 12 player from the state of Texas for the 2027 recruiting class. Rivals is highest on Muhammad, ranking him as the No. 88 overall player in the class.

A lot of notable programs have been pursuing Muhammad over the last several months. Some of his top offers include the Wolverines, Notre Dame, Miami, Texas Tech, Nebraska, Kentucky, TCU, Vanderbilt, Iowa, Oklahoma State, Arizona State, Pitt, SMU, and Houston, among others.

As a junior, Muhammad made a big impact for South Houston. The 6-4, 275-pound defensive lineman managed to collect 22 total tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks, and eight quarterback hurries. Muhammad is also a standout basketball player for the school, averaging 16.4 points and 12.5 rebounds per game this past season. He’s an outstanding overall athlete who is just beginning to tap into his overall upside.
