The Oklahoma Sooners are hoping to build on their best season under head coach Brent Venables, when OU won 10 games and made the College Football Playoff last year. With strong defense and special teams units, the Sooners were able to overcome an offense that lagged behind, but Oklahoma probably won’t be able to rely on a similar path this year.
Replacing the lost depth on the entire roster, and adding more weaponry and physicality on the offensive side of the ball were the focuses for Venables and general manager Jim Nagy in both high school recruiting and the transfer portal this winter. With no spring portal window this year, we have a good idea of what the Sooners will look like this fall, and that goes for every other team as well.
This week, CBS Sports released their rankings of all 138 teams that will play at college football’s highest level (Division I FBS) in 2026, covering the Power Four conferences (the SEC, Big Ten, ACC, Big 12, and Notre Dame) and the Group of Six conferences (the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12, Sun Belt, and UConn). According to the article, college football experts from both CBS Sports and 247Sports contribute ballots each week, which are averaged together for the rankings.
Oklahoma came in at No. 10 in the rankings, good for fourth-best in the SEC. Venables’ team trailed only Texas (2nd), Georgia (5th), and Texas A&M (8th) on the list. A total of 10 SEC teams made the top 25, including Alabama (11th), Ole Miss (12th), LSU (13th), Tennessee (17th), Missouri (21st), and Florida (25th). OU will play seven teams inside the list’s top 25, as they’ll face Texas, Georgia, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, 16th-ranked Michigan, Missouri, and Florida in 2026. Amazingly, only two of those seven games will come in Norman.
The SEC had the most teams in the top 25 of the rankings, followed by the Big Ten with eight. The ACC and Big 12 each placed three teams inside the top 25, and FBS Independent Notre Dame was ranked fourth.
