College Football Playoff expansion has been all the talk this offseason, even though the new 12-team field has only been in effect for two seasons. Now, the power conferences want even more teams and an even longer postseason, and they are going to get it.

The CFP seems poised to expand to 24 teams in a system that would eliminate conference championship games and give some of the bigger conferences a certain number of auto-bids into the field. While the change is not final and isn’t going to be in effect next season at the very least, fans have taken issue with the proposed removal of conference title games.

On Monday at Big Ten meetings, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day talked about how eliminating conference championship games could actually enhance the regular season, specifically rivalry games such as Ohio State-Michigan, via Scott Dochterman of The Athletic.

“I think it could even be more important,” Day told The Athletic on Monday. “You’re playing for either a chance to get into the Playoff or a chance to get seeded high to get a first-round bye. Or, if you are already maybe predicted to be one of the top eight schools, then you’re fighting for a high seed. So, all those are critically important to your success in the Playoff.

“I think with the elimination of the championship game, it keeps that rivalry as fierce as it’s ever been, the stakes just as high.”

Ohio State and Michigan have staged some epic battles over the years, with the Buckeyes finally ending a four-year losing streak against the Wolverines in 2025. It’s hard to think that the biggest rivalry in college football can get even bigger, but that’s clearly what Day thinks can happen with this new system

The Buckeyes have had success in the first season after playoff expansion every time it has come into play. Urban Meyer led Ohio State to a national title in the first year of the four-team CFP, and Day led the Buckeyes to the title in the first year of the 12-team bracket. Maybe the 24-team field, whenever it does get put into play, will also be fruitful for the fans up in Columbus.
