One of the hottest debate topics in the college football world is whether the playoff field should be expanded even further, from 12 teams to 24 teams. The playoff field was just recently pushed from four to 12 two years ago, with some mixed results through the first couple of years of the new format.
Recently, one anonymous commissioner of another conference revealed why he puts the onus on the SEC for getting something done in regards to yet another expansion.
“I still think we’re stuck,” said the commissioner, per Bryan Fischer and Pat Forde of Sports Illustrated. “The SEC has no incentive to support [24]. It all hangs on whether the SEC is willing to give up their championship game.”
Indeed, conference championship games as a whole, and specifically the SEC Championship, have come under increased scrutiny in recent years as a result of the playoff expansion, with some wondering if teams might ironically be incentivized to back out of their conference championships in order to improve their playoff odds.
Of course, there is no clean-cut solution that will answer everyone’s concerns. However, the 12-team format did get some evidence in its favor this past season when the Miami Hurricanes made it all the way to the national championship game, and very nearly upset Indiana when they got there.
Many were outraged when Miami made it in over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, but the Hurricanes ended up justifying that decision and then some with their three straight playoff wins.
With 24 teams allowed in, both Miami and Notre Dame would have made the big dance, but a whole new range of issues would be introduced, causing a new firestorm of discourse.
It remains to be seen how things will play out.
