Tennessee defensive lineman Chaz Coleman was one of the most highly sought-after prospects when he entered the transfer portal from Penn State in December. Coleman’s transition to a Tennessee player has not been smooth, as he missed most of spring training due to off-field issues, as revealed by head coach Josh Heupel.

How the College Football World Reacted to Chaz Coleman’s Absence

On Friday, On3’s Pete Nakos revealed that Coleman had not reported to the Volunteers’ voluntary summer workouts, throwing his continued stay at the program into serious doubt. College football fans and analysts had mixed reactions to the news of Coleman’s absence.

Fox Sports Knoxville reporter William Patteson expressed pessimism about the edge rusher’s future with the program.

“Tennessee EDGE Chaz Coleman failed to show up for Friday’s voluntary workout, Pete Nakos reports. The likelihood Coleman suits up for the #Vols this year is getting increasingly unlikely, I am told. The five-star Penn State transfer recorded 12 pressures on 144 snaps last season,” Patteson tweeted.

College football account Biased Notre Dame Fan predicted that Coleman and the Volunteers would go the legal route after his no-show.

“Lawsuit incoming,” the Biased Notre Dame Fan tweeted.

The Top Tier Georgia account on X asked for a severe punishment for the talented edge rusher.

“I’d kick him off the team,” Top Tier Georgia tweeted.

Coleman was one of the top edge rushers in the transfer portal and was courted by elite teams like the LSU Tigers and Ohio State Buckeyes before he committed to Heupel’s Volunteers.

While speaking to reporters during the SEC Spring Meetings on Wednesday, Heupel gave a brief update about Coleman’s status.

“Chaz has been dealing with some things, and we’re here to support him,” Heupel said. “We’ll continue to go through that process.”

After a breakout freshman season in Happy Valley, Coleman followed several former Penn State coaches to Knoxville, including defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, edge rushers coach Andrew Jackson, and secondary coach Anthony Poindexter.

Coleman was a four-star prospect in the Class of 2025, and he distinguished himself as one of the best edge rushers in the Big Ten. In nine games played for the Nittany Lions, he tallied 15 quarterback pressures, 8 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 2 fumble recoveries, 1 sack, and 1 forced fumble.

The Volunteers lost a lot of talent in the edge rushers department, including Joshua Josephs to the NFL Draft, Caleb Herring to the South Carolina Gamecocks, Jayden Loftin to the Wisconsin Badgers, and Jordan Ross to head coach Lane Kiffin’s high-spending LSU Tigers.

Heupel responded to the losses by bringing in Coleman and Jordan Norman via the transfer portal to boost the Volunteers’ edge rushers room.
