The college football offseason has been anything but quiet. Lawsuits have dominated headlines, debates over playoff expansion continue to rage, and some have even floated the idea of conferences breaking away from the NCAA. Amid all the chaos, another major discussion is beginning to take shape: which coaches will enter the 2026 season on the hot seat?
Several head coaches face enormous expectations. South Carolina’s Shane Beamer and Florida State’s Mike Norvell immediately come to mind. However, one name appears to be quietly moving toward a make-or-break season: USC head coach Lincoln Riley.
Riley has built an impressive resume throughout his coaching career. He has established himself as one of college football’s premier recruiters and quarterback developers, helping mold Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, and Caleb Williams into top NFL Draft picks.

He also guided Oklahoma to three College Football Playoff appearances. There is no question Riley has achieved significant success. However, his tenure at USC has largely fallen short of expectations. The Trojans have missed the playoff in each of his first four seasons, and their highest final ranking under Riley was No. 12.
USC returns quarterback Jayden Maiava for his senior season, and after a 9-3 regular season in 2025, expectations are rising. Fans and media alike expect Riley to lead the Trojans into the College Football Playoff. If he fails to do so, the pressure could intensify quickly.
Bill Austin of The Film Guy Network recently included Riley on his list of college football coaches facing the hottest seats entering the season, ranking him sixth.
“If he goes 8-4, [Lincoln Riley] is cooked,” Austin said.
It’s difficult to argue with that assessment. In fact, many would say it should already be the standard.

USC lured Riley away from Oklahoma with a massive $110 million contract, viewing him as the coach capable of restoring the program to national prominence. Four seasons later, the Trojans remain far from that goal.
To Riley’s credit, he continues to develop NFL-caliber talent. Maiava is projected as a Day 2 pick with the potential to climb into the first round of next year’s NFL Draft. Wide receiver Makai Lemon was also selected in the first round of this year’s draft.
Yet despite producing elite talent, USC still lacks a playoff appearance under Riley. He also has not won a playoff game as the Trojans’ head coach. At some point, player development must translate into postseason success.
USC needs a breakthrough season in 2026. Otherwise, Riley’s seat will only continue to get hotter.
What will it take for Riley to keep his job security intact beyond 2026?
