With only 92 days until Penn State’s season opener we are honoring an incoming defensive tackle, one who represents a serious makeover of the D-line’s complexion. Standing at 6’2” and 337 pounds, Siale Taupaki will be playing his seventh season of college football, after spending the previous six years at UCLA, where injuries cut a couple of his seasons short.

Taupaki played in all 12 of UCLA’s games last year, starting in one of them and tallied 15 total tackles, eight of them solo, and two for a loss, including one sack and a fumble recovery. Matt Campbell has emphasized getting bigger on the D-line, with big space-eating defensive tackles who can hold their own against double teams and clog up running lanes, making the linebacker’s job much easier in terms of keeping opposing ground games in check. Furthermore, he will be reunited with his old D-line coach from UCLA in Ikaika Malloe. Given how used he is to Malloe’s coaching style, the learning curve should be rather easy for him.

While it’s not certain yet that he will be a starter, you can certainly expect Siale to be a key part of the rotation at defensive tackle as he tries to make his final year of college ball his best yet.
