No. 20 Tennessee (7-3, 3-3 SEC) defeated New Mexico State (3-7, 1-5 CUSA), 42-9, at Neyland Stadium in Week 12.
Tennessee totaled 413 yards and allowed 340 yards to the Aggies. The Vols recorded 219 passing yards and 194 rushing yards.
Fifth-year Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel recapped the Vols’ performance after the homecoming matchup.
“Love the win,” Heupel said. “I thought, defensively, we played well in the first half, getting off the field. Did a good job at the line of scrimmage, handled some of the perimeter screen game really well. Offensively, a little bit up and down in the first half, execution really. The turnovers hurt.
“I thought, defensively, they did a good job responding to those, and then offensively, getting points off of turnovers, and, obviously, Will Wright’s big play in the second half, too. Still a lot of things to clean up here, get back into SEC play next week and go on the road.”
Tennessee will next play at Florida on Saturday in Week 13. Kickoff between the Vols and Gators is slated for 7:30 p.m. EST (ABC) at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Florida.
