The Wisconsin Badgers football team starts its Big Ten Conference portion of its schedule with a tough test as it travels to University Park, Pennsylvania, to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Opening conference play at Beaver Stadium is a formidable task, as Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell knows all too well.

“There's no place that can be a wilder, crazier, louder environment than Happy Valley, especially later at night in a game that means a lot,” the Badgers coach said earlier this week.

UW will face a Penn State squad that cleaned house after a season in which the Nittany Lions finished 7-6 overall and 3-6 in Big Ten play.

The biggest change is at head coach as the school brought in former Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell to take over the reins for the departed James Franklin.

A good majority of the team’s roster overall has a heavy Iowa State flavor as well as nearly two dozen players followed Campbell from Ames to State College via the transfer portal.

One player who decided to transfer from Iowa State didn’t follow his teammates and ended up in Madison instead.

Badgers running back Abu Sama will face many of his ex-teammates as he is expected to return from a shoulder injury that forced him out in Week 3.

His return should give the Badgers’ running game a breakaway threat that was missing against Eastern Michigan on Sept. 19 in a 54-10 win.

If the Badgers’ offense can employ that same formula of mixing things up and staying ahead of the chains it used against Eastern Michigan, UW should be in good shape this season.

Defensively, UW hopes its three-turnover performance against the Eagles last week isn’t a one-game deal.
