SEC tiebreaker scenarios: Can Georgia football make championship after Texas win?

Georgia football concluded its 2025 SEC football schedule with a bang.

The No. 5 Bulldogs (9-1, 7-1 SEC) defeated No. 10 Texas at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia. It was the sixth straight win for Georgia following its lone loss of the season to Alabama on Sept. 27.

With the win, the Bulldogs are locked into a 7-1 record in SEC play this season. However, because of the head-to-head loss to the Crimson Tide, Georgia does not control its own fate in the SEC conference standings for a spot in the championship game in Atlanta.

However, it is still possible for Georgia to get there, though the Bulldogs need some help over the final two weeks. The Bulldogs play Charlotte and in-state rival Georgia Tech to close out the regular season, and can no longer help themselves as it relates to the SEC title game race.

So, what does that mean for the Bulldogs' SEC championship hopes following their top-10 win over the Longhorns? Here's what to know:

Can Georgia football make SEC championship game?

Yes, Georgia can still make the SEC championship game. In fact, the road to Atlanta would have been significantly more difficult had the Bulldogs not defeated the Longhorns, as they would have had two conference losses, including head-to-head defeats to both Alabama and Texas.

Currently, Georgia is in second place in the standings with its 7-1 SEC record. Texas A&M is in first with a 7-0 record and a matchup against Texas to end the season. Meanwhile, Ole Miss and Alabama each sit at 6-1 with one conference game remaining.

Here's how the Bulldogs can make the conference championship game:

  • Alabama loses to Auburn: The Bulldogs lost the head-to-head matchup to Alabama on Sept. 27. Therefore, Georgia loses the first SEC standings tiebreaker to the Crimson Tide if both teams finish 7-1 in conference play. But if Auburn wins the Iron Bowl, Alabama drops to 6-2, moving Georgia ahead of the Crimson Tide.
  • Texas A&M loses to Texas: Georgia eliminated Texas with its win on Nov. 15. The Longhorns can now do the same to in-state rival Texas A&M. The Bulldogs and Aggies did not play in the regular season, but Georgia would finish No. 2, behind Alabama, in a four-way tie for first — getting in via the SEC's second tiebreaker.
  • Ole Miss win and SOS win over Alabama:According to ESPN's Cole Cubelic, there is a scenario that each of Ole Miss, Alabama and Texas wins in Week 14 and Georgia still makes it in over comparative strength of schedule.
