Texas does not have Texas Tech on its future schedule and may not schedule them anytime soon. Multiple teams are threatening not to play against Texas Tech due to the situation around Brendan Sorsby.
While Steve Sarkisian does not have to play against Texas Tech and Sorsby, he is still taking jabs at the program and the state of injunction in general, according to Nick Kosko of On3.
“The ways these injunctions are going, Pat Mahomes might be playing quarterback from Texas Tech again before Joey’s done,” Sark said.
Mahomes played three seasons at Texas Tech before being selected tenth overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. Since then, he has gone on to win three Super Bowls and two MVP awards.
While Sark made the quip about Sorsby and Mahomes, he also had to back-track on some previous comments. He took a jab at Texas Tech at the end of May when discussing playoff expansion, according to Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods.com.
“There’s a team in our state that plays in another conference that has a schedule that I would argue if I played with our twos and our threes, we could go undefeated, and they’ll probably make the CFP this year,” Sarkisian said.
Now, the Texas coach has backtracked some, speaking to Kay Adams of Up and Adams.
“I probably could have said it better,” Sarkisian told Adams. “I was talking about the inequities in college football, and one of the inequities in college football, which we touched on earlier, is strength of schedule and who your opponents are, and then the toll it takes on your team as you get ready for the playoffs. And you know that that comment came out about, you know, it’s one thing to play in another conference, it’s another who are you scheduling in your non-conference, and then ultimately getting into the playoffs.”
Texas Tech could be making a playoff run in 2026. Still, that likely hinges on Sorsby playing this season. If he is playing, Sarkisian could see him on the opposite sideline in late December.
