While Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian will lead the program into the 2026 season to improve after a relatively disappointing campaign, he has once again given his thoughts on the College Football Playoff (CFP) expansion. As the Texas football head coach in Sarkisian has spoken about the expanded CFP field before, and he continues to caution the movement of the talks.
A key word that Sarkisian would say when being interviewed by Kay Adams on “Up & Adams” was that the college football world needs to be “careful” about the expansion talks, which have a future of being a 24-team field.
“I always think that we have to be thoughtful in the changes that we make, and we’ve been pushed into a lot of change in college football, and understandably so in the last four or five years with conference realignment. We moved from the Big 12 to the SEC, with Oklahoma, USC, and UCLA, and Oregon and Washington are now in the Big Ten, that’s still some of that stuff is still hard for me to grasp,” Sarkisian said, via On3 Sports.
“We went from a two-team playoff to a 12-team playoff; we went to NIL, then we went to revenue share with the players, and now we’re talking about more expansion in the College Football Playoff, and I just think we need to be careful here,” Sarkisian continued.
Texas football’s Steve Sarkisian speaks on minimizing the regular season
Sarkisian would continue talking about how an even more expanded CFP field could minimize the regular season, which includes non-conference and conference games.
“We need to look at all of the consequences, some intended, some unintended consequences, before we just run to 16, 20, or 24 teams, and the impact that it has on the regular season, the impact that it has on our schedule as coaches, to make sure that’s what’s best for the game,” Sarkisian said.
It remains to be seen how the college football landscape will change, especially when it comes to the CFP and how many teams will compete in it. As for the Longhorns, the focus will be on improving.
