CFL closes another door for Brendon Sorsby, won't register former Texas Tech QB

The Canadian Football League will not allow teams to sign former Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby, the league said in a statement shared with USA TODAY Sports.
“Upholding the integrity of the league and ensuring fair competition are paramount to the CFL. The allegations involving Brendan Sorsby are serious and concerning,” said the league.
“At this time, the CFL will not register a contract for him, and no team will be permitted to add him to its negotiation list.”
The decision eliminates one possible landing spot for Sorsby to play this season after he renounced his final year of college eligibility and the NFL opted not to hold a supplemental draft. The 2026 CFL season began earlier this month and runs through mid-November.
According to CFL eligibility rules, American players can be added to a team’s roster via the annual draft, which occurred this past April, or through an open tryout. If not taken in the draft, a prospective American player can be signed by any CFL franchise or placed on a team’s “negotiation list,” meaning his signing rights are exclusively owned by that team.
Sorsby was under NCAA investigation for allegedly gambling on his own team’s games while a backup at Indiana and continuing to gamble on sports in violation of NCAA bylaws while at Cincinnati. He transferred to Texas Tech this past offseason and was seen as one of the biggest additions in the Power Four.
With the UFL season complete, Sorsby’s options to play in 2026 are limited to the junior college level. That would place him on the same path as current New Orleans Saints quarterback Hunter Dekkers, who was suspended indefinitely for gambling while at Iowa State and finished his college career at Iowa Western Community College.
