Jun. 26—***
Earlier in June, I used this space to count down the Top 10 Heisman Trophy candidates for 2026. (The list is at the bottom.)
That doesn't come close to covering all the possibilities. Last year, Fernando Mendoza wasn't considered a candidate going into the year. So, into July. I will float some names of guys who might enter the conversation if they get off to a hot start.
Today, the first (but not last) running back on the list.
Bo Jackson, Ohio State running back
Can't believe it took so long to put the first running back on the list.
Coming off an amazing rookie season with the Buckeyes with 1,090 rushing yards and six touchdowns), Jackson fit in nicely with a team of stars.
Heck, he is third most likely Heisman candidate on his team behind receiver Jeremiah Smith and quarterback Julian Sayin. That actually helps his cause, making it impossible for opposing defenses to zero in on Jackson.
He is a capable receiver, who figures to be used more out of the backfield this season.
Jackson is the latest in the long line of great Buckeye backs, following Heisman winners Archie Griiffin (twice) and Eddie George. Those two have to be thrilled watching No. 25 on the field. They wore 27 (George) and 45 (Griffin) while in Columbus.
Jackson played high school football in Cleveland and had his pick of top programs.
He needs to ready at the start of the season as Ohio State travels to Texas in the second week. Illinois will see him in Columbus on Sept. 26. He will also be tested by Iowa, Indiana, Southern California, Oregon and Michigan.
