As the Tennessee football team had to deal with a decommitment from a four-star defensive lineman on Thursday, the program dealt with more frustrating news on Friday. While the Tennessee football program continues to try to land recruits, there was one player who had to be dismissed from the roster due to medical reasons.

According to Pete Nakos and Chris Low of On3 Sports, the Volunteers have “medically disqualified” pass-rusher Chaz Coleman from the team after missing summer workouts and the second half of spring practice. On3 Sports even reported that he “missed his report day” for voluntary summer workouts, which started earlier in June.

“Tennessee has parted ways with Penn State transfer EDGE Chaz Coleman, sources tell Chris Low and me for On3. He has been medically disqualified from the Volunteers’ roster,” Nakos wrote.

Tennessee football’s Josh Heupel speaks on Chaz Coleman

Tennessee football head coach Josh Heupel would say to On3 Sports on Wednesday that Coleman had “been dealing with some things.”

“Chaz has been dealing with some things, and we’re here to support him,” Heupel said during SEC spring meetings. “We’ll continue to go through that process.”

There is no denying how big a blow it is for the Volunteers, especially with how exciting a player Coleman is, with even defensive coordinator Jim Knowles singing his praises back in February.

“He’s explosive,” Knowles said. “He’s difficult to block. He has a little bit of an invisible cloak, where he can twist, turn, and beat guys one-on-one. He has great initial quickness off the ball. So he’s a guy that can create havoc for an offense and really creates a matchup issue.”

Coleman, like Knowles, comes from Penn State, where he was entering his sophomore season after only playing 144 snaps as a freshman with the Nittany Lions last season. It remains to be seen what happens with Coleman in his collegiate career.
