As the University of Michigan football program embarks on an exciting new era in 2026 under head coach Kyle Whittingham, rebuilding a dominant, physical identity in the trenches stands at the top of the priority list. To ensure the Wolverines return to their standard of elite line play, Whittingham brought his most trusted lieutenant with him from Salt Lake City. Enter Jim Harding, Michigan’s new Assistant Head Coach and Donald C. Graham Offensive Line Coach.
A graphic shared by the program highlights the incredible resume of a veteran coach who is widely respected as one of the finest developer of linemen in college football. With 22 seasons of coaching experience under his belt, Harding is primed to inject stability, technique, and a relentless rushing culture back into Ann Arbor.

A Proven Developer of Elite Talent
For over a decade at Utah, Harding built a reputation for turning under-recruited prospects into NFL-caliber powerhouse linemen. His track record speaks for itself: 13 NFL players and six draft picks have developed under his watchful eye. This distinguished list includes 2017 first-round draft pick Garrett Bolles, as well as recent elite first-rounders Spencer Fano and Caleb Lomu.
Harding’s work with Spencer Fano serves as a perfect blueprint for what Michigan fans can expect. Under Harding’s tutelage, Fano became the 2025 Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year, a consensus All-American, and Utah's first-ever Outland Trophy winner. In total, Harding has coached 11 players to first-team All-Pac 12 or All-Big 12 honors. His arrival at Michigan means inheriting a roster blessed with top-tier resources and elite recruits, a combination that could yield staggering results.
Establishing the Ground Game
Michigan’s national championship identity was historically forged on dominant run blocking. Harding’s statistical profile shows he is the exact architect needed to revitalize that philosophy. During his 12 years at Utah, his offensive lines paved the way for:
- 8 different 1,000-yard rushers, showcasing consistency regardless of the personnel in the backfield.
- 9 seasons of 20-plus rushing touchdowns, wearing opponents down over four quarters.
- 3 top-5 national finishes in rushing touchdowns over the last five years alone, culminating in an explosive 41-touchdown ground attack in 2025.
Harding understands how to marry technique with standard schematic advantages, altering block angles to exploit modern defensive fronts.
A Homecoming and a "Breath of Fresh Air"
For Harding, the move to Michigan is also a return to his roots. Born in Maumee, Ohio, he played his college football at Toledo, where he was a team captain, a four-year starter at offensive tackle, and a first-team All-MAC selection in 2000. He also spent four years early in his career coaching at Troy Athens High School in southeast Michigan.
This move marks Harding's 10th season serving as Assistant Head Coach under Kyle Whittingham. This profound continuity between the head coach and his top assistant provides Michigan with a seamless transition during a crucial structural shift.
Early reports out of spring practice indicate the player-coach connection is already paying massive dividends. Michigan offensive tackle Blake Frazier publicly praised the veteran assistant, calling him a "breath of fresh air" for the unit. Frazier noted:
"I think he's done a really good job of understanding every individual's personality and figuring out how to work with each of us… He listens to what things we feel like we need to work on. He's teaching us new techniques that I personally have not had the chance to develop."
Navigating the Big Ten Gauntlet
The Wolverines face a daunting 2026 schedule featuring heavyweights like Ohio State, Oregon, and Penn State. Winning those matchups requires controlling the line of scrimmage. With Jim Harding overseeing the trenches and assisting Whittingham at the helm, Michigan has secured the elite leadership necessary to bring the Joe Moore Award standard back to Ann Arbor.
