Notre Dame has seen some memorable and impactful defensive performances over the past 25 years. There have been countless players who have left their mark, gone on to be award winners, finalists for trophies, be named All-Americans and have gone on to become NFL Draft picks. Last week, I broke down the top five best single season offensive performances of the last 25 years. Now, it's time to turn my attention to the defensive side of the ball.
This was an extremely difficult ranking to put together because there's been so many unforgettable defensive seasons from 2000 to 2025. I evaluated everything from stats and post season accolades to the impact those players had on the team in their respective seasons. There's a lot of spots on this list that are debate, but the debate for No. 1 isn't all that close.
1. LB Manti Te'o – 2012
Te'o's 2012 season set the gold standard for a single season performance on defense. He was the engineer and the leader on the spectacular 2012 defense which still goes down as one of the best defenses in program history. The Hawaii native finished the season with 111 tackles, 5.5 tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks and seven interceptions. His performance led him to being one of the three Heisman finalists in 2012 and the winner of the Maxwell Award, Butkus Award, Lombardi Award, Bronko Nagurski Award, the Walter Camp Player of the Year and winner of the Lott Impact Trophy. Te'o was also named a Unanimous All-American in 2012. To this day, he's one of the most decorated defensive players in college football history.
2. S Xavier Watts – 2024
His big postseason accolades came after his stellar 2023 season, but we've said before that Watts was a better football player in 2024. He was the heart and soul of the 2024 defense and helped lead the Irish to a 14-2 overall record and back to back major bowl wins in the Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl. Watts was named the Sugar Bowl defensive MVP and a Consensus All-American for his performance in 2024. He followed up his seven-interception season in 2023 with a six-interception performance in 2024 to go along with his 83 tackles, 3.5 tackles for a loss and six passes defended.
3.DE Justin Tuck – 2003
There's a debate for which stellar season between 2003 and 2004 when talking about Tuck. Since I was too young to watch him play, I went with his most productive season. But it's worth noting that his most decorated season was 2004 where he was named a Consensus All-American and a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Award and the Lombardi Award. In 2003, Tuck tallied 73 tackles, 20.5 tackles for a loss, 13.5 sacks and three forced fumbles. His 13.5 sacks in 2003 still stands as the single-season record for most sacks in a year.
4.CB Shane Walton – 2002
This was before my time, but with a list like this, going back and looking back at stats makes it a little easier. Walton was one of the most productive defensive backs of the last 25 years recording 68 tackles, 0.5 tackles for a loss, seven interceptions and two pick sixes in 2002. Walton was also the first Notre Dame defensive player in program history to be named a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Award and was named a Unanimous All-American in 2002. He was one of the lead players on defense on a Notre Dame team that finished 10-3.
5.LBJeremiah Owusu-Koramoah – 2020
'JOK' ended his Notre Dame career as one of the most decorated linebackers to have come through the program. He finished the season with 61 total tackles, 11.0 tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and one interception. Owusu-Koramoah also made clutch play after clutch play in Notre Dame's most recent undefeated regular season. In their one year in the conference, he ended as the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, won the Butkus Award and was named a Unanimous All-American. He had one of the most impressive single-seasons of a Notre Dame linebacker of the last 25 years.
5. LB Jaylon Smith – 2015
Yes, I have two 'No. 5' on this ranking, but there was no way I could choose between Owusu-Koramoah and Smith for the final spot in this ranking. Both players won the Butkus Award. Owusu-Koramoah was a Unanimous All-American while Smith was a Consensus All-American, but Smith had a much different situation at defensive coordinator than JOK did. The Fort Wayne, Indiana native finished the 2015 season with 114 tackles, 9.0 tackles for a loss, 1.0 sack, five passes defended, 1 forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. To this day, he's still the most talented linebacker prospect I've ever seen.
HONORABLE MENTION
LB Courtney Watson – 2003
S Harrison Smith – 2010
CB Julian Love – 2017
S Kyle Hamilton – 2020
