The Oklahoma Sooners are cruising on the recruiting trail in the 2027 cycle and could be on the verge of breaking the ice in 2028. After committing to Notre Dame on June 25, four-star quarterback Trey Tagliaferri decommitted from the Irish on Wednesday evening.
In the wake of his decommitment, the Sooners look like the new destination. Rivals vice president of recruiting and transfer portal Steve Wiltfong and Notre Dame recruiting insider Mike Singer favored the Sooners. Brian Dohn, a national recruiting analyst for 247Sports, also predicted the Sooners to land Tagliaferri.
Tagliaferri is the No. 11 quarterback in the 2028 recruiting class according to Rivals and the No. 19 quarterback prospect in the cycle per 247Sports. He’s a four-star in the Rivals Industry and 247Sports composite rankings.
The Oklahoma Sooners had Tagliaferri on campus last week and made a strong impression.
He brings good size at 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds and holds 27 Power Four offers, including 11 SEC offers from the likes of Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State, Missouri, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Texas A&M, and Vanderbilt. Elite Big Ten programs like Indiana and Ohio State have also offered the talented prospect out of New Jersey.
Tagliaferri is an impressive pocket passer, showing the ability to throw to all fields of the offense. He displays a great deep ball that is very catchable for his wide receivers. He plays on time within the structure of the offense, getting the ball out quickly to his playmakers. Tagliaferri is an accurate passer who can hit his wide receivers in stride, whether throwing downfield or in the quick passing game.
He doesn’t run a lot but has the athleticism to make plays with his feet. On the move, Tagliaferri keeps his eyes down the field, looking to make big plays through the air.
Though a commitment is still pending and they have to get him to the 2028 signing period, the Sooners are in a strong position to land their quarterback in the 2028 recruiting class.
