The Oklahoma Sooners still have a top-three recruiting class, but they could have used Uhila Wolfgramm.

The Oklahoma Sooners lost out on four-star edge rusher Uhila Wolfgramm, who committed to BYU over OU. The 6’3, 255-pound prospect posted “hometown hero” on his commitment announcement, signaling a return to his home state of Utah.

Oklahoma needed another edge rusher in the 2027 recruiting class, and Wolfgramm seemed like a real possibility after his visit to Norman.

Many believed the Sooners had a legitimate shot at landing Wolfgramm. That belief stemmed from the timing of his visit, which came during a stretch when OU was hosting several top recruits and converting those visits into commitments at a high rate. When the Sooners get players on campus, they tend to close. That track record made Wolfgramm’s visit seem likely to produce the same result.

It didn’t. And while that’s disappointing for a program that could use more pass-rush talent in its pipeline, the loss might not sting as much as it appears on the surface.

Wolfgramm was likely always headed to a Utah school

Given his ties to the state and his “hometown hero” framing, there’s a reasonable chance Wolfgramm was always leaning toward staying close to home. BYU offered that proximity, and it appears the pull of playing in his home state outweighed whatever Oklahoma put on the table during his visit. Sometimes geography wins, and this feels like one of those situations.

That doesn’t erase the fact that Oklahoma still needs to add another edge rusher to its 2027 class. Right now, the Sooners have two committed at the position. Crew Jones, a four-star prospect, is the headliner. He’s elite physically and brings the kind of technical refinement that projects well at the next level. Samuel Nelson, a three-star out of Bryant, Arkansas, rounds out the current group. Nelson is the younger brother of Matthew Nelson, who signed with OU in the 2026 class. He can develop into a quality contributor, but the Sooners would benefit from adding one more piece.

OU’s defensive line recruiting is still in good shape

The Sooners already have several defensive linemen committed in this class, and the overall trajectory of the 2027 group remains strong. Missing on Wolfgramm doesn’t derail anything. It just means coach Brent Venables and his staff need to identify and pursue another edge target before the class is finished.

Venables has proven he can recruit defensive talent at a high level, and there’s no reason to think the Sooners won’t find another option. The need is real, but so is Oklahoma’s ability to go out and fill it.
