The Colorado Buffaloes enter the 2026 season with plenty to fix after a disappointing 3-9 campaign. They dropped seven of their final eight games, managed just one conference victory, and finished No. 112 nationally in total offense while ranking No. 121 in total defense.

After the season ended, head coach Deion Sanders accepted responsibility for the collapse. Now, Colorado quarterback Julian Lewis has revealed a reason the offense never found consistency and it caught the attention of Colorado alumnus and Super Bowl champion Tyler Polumbus, who could hardly believe what he heard.

The young passer admitted he spent very little time studying opposing defenses during his freshman season.

“I’m actually looking at the defenses now,” Lewis said a few hours ago when asked about expectations for the future. “Last year, we wasn’t really looking at the defenses much, just kind of high school free balling.”

Those remarks raised concerns about how Lewis was developed and coached during his first year. Instead of building strong habits, he appeared to rely almost entirely on natural talent, an approach that rarely succeeds at the college level.

Because of that, Polumbus reacted on X with a blunt message that summed up his concern surrounding his former college program: “Oh boy, I really wish I didn’t see things like this…🤦‍♂️.”

Colorado had inconsistent play under center throughout the season. On the other side of the ball, its run defense finished No. 133 out of 134 major college football teams.

The problems on offense eventually forced a coaching change, as offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur lost his play-calling duties in early November after a rough stretch.

Lewis played in two games with Shurmur calling the offense and completed 11 of 21 passes for 129 yards.

However, the coaching adjustment failed to spark meaningful improvement, as Colorado’s offensive issues continued through the remainder of the season.

Still, Sanders believes the program is entering a completely different phase this season. The head coach has repeatedly praised Lewis, saying the young quarterback has “a ceiling that’s unbelievable.”

Sanders also overhauled the roster by bringing in 66 new players. He also made major changes on the sideline, replacing both his offensive and defensive coordinators in hopes of avoiding the mistakes that fueled last year’s disappointing campaign.

Offensive coordinator Brennan Marion arrives after leading Sacramento State as head coach, while defensive coordinator Chris Marve earned a promotion after Robert Livingston departed for the Denver Broncos.

Both coaches have built strong resumes, but the massive roster turnover makes it difficult to predict how quickly everything will come together once the season begins.

Still, Sanders has shown no shortage of confidence ahead of the opener. Colorado will kick off its season on Thursday, Sept. 3 against Georgia Tech and the head coach made it clear he is eager to get started.

“I can’t wait to get to Atlanta,” he said Tuesday. “We have curfew on the coaches, not the players.”

For Colorado to reach its full potential, Lewis will have to step up.
