Colorado will take a different approach when it opens the season at Georgia Tech on Sept. 3, and Deion Sanders made it clear the focus will be on preparation.

Speaking at Big 12 Media Days this week, Sanders said the coaching staff — not the players — will be the group held to a curfew in Atlanta. Colorado lost last year’s opener to Georgia Tech in Boulder after surrendering a late 45-yard rushing touchdown in a 27-20 defeat, and Sanders appears determined to avoid a repeat.

“I got the coaches on curfew, not the kids,” Sanders said. “The coaches are having a curfew against Georgia Tech. We’re going there two days early, we’ll be there on a Tuesday, we play on Thursday night in front of the whole country, I can’t wait.”

The move gives Colorado extra time to settle in before the nationally televised game and reflects the urgency around a program coming off a 3-9 season. The Buffs were much better in 2024, but they enter this fall with a different roster and a different look after several key departures.

Sanders’ comments also fit a broader theme from the offseason: more structure, more discipline and a sharper edge. Colorado has reshaped its staff and enters the year with Brennan Marion taking over as offensive coordinator, giving the Buffs a new voice on offense as they try to get back on track.

For Colorado, the opener carries more weight than a normal Week 1 game. It is a rematch, a chance to set a different tone against a quality opponent, and to see whether Sanders’ offseason changes can produce a positive start.
