Heading into the 2026 season, Texas A&M will heavily depend on redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed taking another crucial step towards reaching his full potential under center after throwing for a career-high 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns, while his 12 interceptions were tied for the second-most in the SEC, which can’t be replicated this season if the Aggies plan on making it back to the College Football Playoff.

After the 2026 season, Marcel Reed isn’t guaranteed to return and could test the NFL Draft waters, given how well he performs this fall. Either way, preparing for the future is critical, and third-year coach Mike Elko is looking to land one of the top signal callers in the 2028 recruiting class after landing four-star QB Jayce Johnson in the No. 1-ranked 2027 cycle.

Early in the offseason, blue-chip four-star quarterback Donald Tabron II looked highly impressive during his appearance at one of Texas A&M’s camps, and while the Detroit (MI) native is being pursued by Michigan, Elko and quarterbacks coach Joey Lynch are in prime position to land his commitment ahead of the four-star signal caller’s junior season at Cass Technical.

Texas A&M currently has a 90% chance of securing Tabron, and on Thursday, Rivals insider Sam Spiegelman predicted the Aggies would do just that.

“Elite Detroit (Mich.) Cass QB Donald Tabron II lit up Texas A&M camp earlier this summer. From speaking with sources informed on this recruitment, the Aggies made a substantial impression on the top-30 prospect in the 2028 class and have put themselves in a favorable position with Tabron since his time in College Station.

I’ve joined the party with an early RPM forecast for the Aggies to eventually add a commitment from Tabron.”

Standing 6’4″ and 190 pounds, Tabron has plenty of room to grow and fill out his frame, and he instantly became a target for Mike Elko after throwing for 1,656 yards and 17 touchdowns during his freshman season.
