If there’s anything that anyone can say about Kalen Deboer, it’s that his recruiting of quarterbacks is probably the best in all of college football.

Alabama secured a top in-state prospect Friday with a commitment from four-star quarterback Kingston Preyear, ESPN’s No. 3 pocket passer in the 2028 recruiting class.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound quarterback from Alexander City, Alabama, is the No. 39 overall recruit in the SC Next Junior 300. He chose the Crimson Tide over finalists Florida and Vanderbilt, landing as the highest-rated of five prospects already committed to the program’s 2028 class.

“It feels great to know that I’ll be able to recruit other guys to build a team around me so we can go win a national championship and bring Bama football back,” Preyear told ESPN. Preyear is ESPN’s No. 2 overall prospect in the state of Alabama for the 2028 class.

Kingston Preyear is immediately the top player in Alabama’s 2028 class, with ESPN, Rivals, and 247 all rating him as a high-end 4-star player out of Benjamin Russell high school in the state of Alabama. He’s still young, but has been an absolute phenom as a freshman and a sophomore for one of the top programs in the state, and is already 6’2” 190.

From Andrew Irvins of 247:

-Athletic trigger-man that can rip tight spirals and hunt big plays.

-Enters junior season with a 21-2 starting record and has shown noticeable year-over-year growth.

-Can get the ball out fast in the quick game with a rapid release.

-Not afraid to take risks and trusts his arm when looking to challenge the deeper third.

-Will try to look off defenders and beat them with a snappy upper half.

-Constantly extending plays with legs and is a threat to move the chains on RPO calls.

-Must keep progressing and avoid setbacks, but has a chance to thrive in an up-tempo spread attack with his build and skill set.

With a top QB on board early, that typically helps with building out a recruiting class. While 2028 is still a long ways away, if the narrative is correct that the Alabama coaching staff is intentionally keeping the 2027 class small, then we should expect the 2028 one to be absolutely elite.

Anyway, enjoy these highlights of a high school sophomore with two more years of development to go.

Roll Tide!
