Kyle Whittingham has made an obvious commitment to the trenches for the Michigan Wolverines in his first offseason as head coach. The program recruited and retained high school talent well, given the chaotic catastrophe that spelled the end of the Sherrone Moore era. One of the key pieces that stayed put was freshman defensive lineman Titan Davis.
The story so far
Almost a year ago, Davis committed to the Wolverines thanks to the recruiting efforts of then-defensive line coach Lou Esposito following official visits to both Ann Arbor and Alabama. The Wolverines beat out a top four that included the Crimson Tide, USC and Penn State.
As a four-star and Top 100 recruit, the St. Louis product had quite the developmental high school journey. Davis was a quarterback as a freshman before switching to defensive line as a sophomore when he grew to 6-foot-4, 235 pounds. He added another 30 pounds to his frame heading into his junior year, and that paid off, as he compiled 18 tackles for loss and nine sacks.
Born in August, he’s still only 18 years old and will be a young 19 when starting his career with the Wolverines.
Outlook for 2026
For only playing the position for three years, Davis was a standout high school performer and was the second-best prospect out of Missouri in the cycle. The sense early on is he could be a part of the interior defensive line rotation this fall. CBS Sports just named Davis as a Big Ten freshman to watch.
“One of the most instinctive bullies in this 2026 class for the Wolverines, Davis has the frame, athleticism and football IQ to contribute earlier than most freshmen, especially from a rotational sense. However, being a summer enrollee may alter that timeline a bit. The Wolverines won’t need him to be a star immediately, but his blend of toughness and athletic upside could earn him meaningful snaps in Year 1 playing behind Trey Pierce and Enow Etta inside. Long-term, Davis has all the tools to become one of Michigan’s most impactful defenders and a cornerstone of Whittingham’s defensive identity.”
Trey Pierce and Enow Etta will be the starters. Whittingham also brought transfer Jonah Lea’ea with him from Utah. Outside of that, the depth is up for grabs between Davis, Deyvid Palepale, Alister Vallejo, Chibi Anwunah and Travis Moten. There’s a real possibility that multiple true freshmen see the rotation this fall.
