Florida Has Too Many Big Question Marks Surfacing Before Camp

Former Florida Gators head coach Steve Spurrier thinks Jon Sumrall can win 10 games during his first season in Gainesville.

While the Gators are receiving major buzz this offseason, especially for a team coming off a 4-8 record in 2025, even winning eight games this fall would show that Sumrall is turning around the program given the challenges that face the program after the Billy Napier era.

The biggest issue for Florida is what new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner will do at quarterback after DJ Lagway transferred to Baylor. Does Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo or Tramell Jones Jr. start?

In addition to quarterback, can the offensive line, and holdovers on defense from Napier's team, play up to the level of intensity that Sumrall desires?

Austin Nivison of CBS Sports thinks those reasons are why Florida should be considered a wild-card team this fall.

"The Gators are the definition of a wild-card team," he wrote. "This is a relatively talented roster with some obvious question marks. Offensively, no one is doubting running back Jadan Baugh or the overall skill at the wide receiver position, but how good is Aaron Philo?

"He attempted just 102 passes at Georgia Tech, and Florida needs to find answers at offensive tackle in order to keep Philo upright."

Nivison thinks the schedule is doable for Florida. However, the defense will need some players to step up to stay in the College Football Playoff race.

"Defensively, it's a similar story," he wrote. "Linebacker Myles Graham and edge Jayden Woods provide Florida with firepower on that side of the ball, but are the Gators good enough along the defensive line and in the secondary to reach the playoffs?

"The schedule, while not easy by any stretch, is a bit softer than it has been over the last couple of seasons."

Sumrall wanted to add more help on defense, especially in the trenches, after spring football. Thanks to changes with the transfer portal, the Gators will have to wait for reinforcements to join the team in 2027.

Sumrall and his staff will have to develop what they have on the roster. That should be enough to make a bowl game, but anything more will have to wait for 2027, when UF should be a UF contender.
