Jumbo Package: SEC Media Day representatives announced

Happy Gump Day, everyone. We’re getting closer, as SEC Media Days are merely a week away. We learned yesterday who would be representing Alabama.

The SEC released the names of SEC media days attendees Tuesday, and the three Alabama players will be Zabien Brown, Bray Hubbard and Ryan Coleman-Williams.

Each is heading into his third season as a starter for the Crimson Tide.

Alabama will have its day as part of the conference’s kickoff event Wednesday, July 22 at the Tampa Marriott Water Street and JW Marriott. Media days heads to Tampa this year after stops in Atlanta, Dallas and Nashville the past three years. Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer will accompany Brown, Coleman-Williams and Hubbard.

Those are great choices, and Katie Windham notes that 65% of Alabama’s media days attendees have gone on to become permanent captains.

Alabama has countless traditions, but among the most notable is the Walk of Fame at the Denny Chimes clock tower in the middle of campus. Since 1948, Crimson Tide football captains have left their handprints and footprints in the concrete around Denny Chimes — immortalizing their legacy.

Under Kalen DeBoer, the captains are voted on by the players shortly before the season. Meanwhile, under Nick Saban, the captains were voted on by the team after the season came to a close.

The players chosen to represent Alabama at SEC Media Days have quite the track record of being named among the captains a few weeks after the annual event. Here’s a look at how many SEC Media Days representatives since 2015 have cemented themselves at Denny Chimes.

The secondary is considered the strength of the 2026 squad, so it’s not surprising that two of the three are defensive backs. Today’s installment in the “50 players” series is about another in that group.

At cornerback, Zabien Brown has been a constant for those two seasons, and there have also been players such as Domani Jackson, Jaylen Mbakwe and others in the mix at corner. Then at safety, Malachi Moore and Keon Sabb manned the starting spots in 2024 before Sabb went down with injury and Bray Hubbard replaced him. Hubbard hasn’t looked back since or left the lineup.

All that to say, Mincey’s had plenty of high-quality competition for playing time. But the defensive coaching staff found a way to get him more snaps as a sophomore.

Will that increase even more as a junior?

Brown, Sabb, Hubbard and former five-star Dijon Lee are all back and figure to fill four starting spots in the secondary. That leaves the nickelback spot called the “Husky” in this defensive system. Red Morgan is a favorite there.

So what role does that leave for someone such as Mincey?

Mincey should be the leader at dime back, though freshman Jireh Edwards is going to be very difficult to keep off the field.

Blake Toppmeyer has Alabama ranked as the top SEC program, which is a no brainer.

1. Alabama

Alabama football is more than a program, and it’s bigger than an international brand. It’s a way of life. The Script A represents tradition and excellence. Alabama fans are plugged in year-round to their favorite sport, and expectations rarely dip. Coaches who thrive in T-Town are immortalized in bronze. The GOAT conversation runs through Alabama. Is it Nick Saban or Bear Bryant? Either way, it’s an Alabama coach.

Last, Rivals is celebrating Gump Day by telling us that Alabama is going to flip a 2027 WR from the Barn.

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Simmons was one of the most dominant players in the state of Alabama. As a junior he turned 106 receptions into 2,192 yards and 20 touchdowns. He had two pick sixes playing defense as well.

Alabama offered Simmons at the start of June and hosted him on an official visit the weekend of June 12.

The Crimson Tide have 13 commits to date in the 2027 cycle. Taking a smaller class, that means they prioritize Simmons and if they do flip him, they’ll be ecstatic to have him in the fold.
