Texas A&M, Texas Tabbed As SEC's Best Matchup For Upcoming Season

The rivalry between Texas A&M and Texas needs no introduction. It is one of the most historic and bitter feuds in all of collegiate athletics, with football being the marquee meeting each year.

That is, at least, once the Aggies and the Longhorns found their way back into a conference with each other three years ago. Despite the break in the beef during the time when A&M went away to the SEC and Texas held things down in the Big 12, no ill feelings were cured.

While the malice runs deep on both sides, Texas, unfortunately, runs the rivalry on the field. In those two most recent meetings in the SEC, the Longhorns have emerged victorious each time.

Including an upset win by Texas last year in Austin against an undefeated Aggies squad that would have punched their ticket to their first-ever SEC Championship with a win over their most-hated foe.

A&M might have gotten the last laugh by still making the College Football Playoff in spite of the defeat, while Texas had to sit at home and watch. However, the Aggies' stint did not last very much longer following a first-round exit to Miami.

With both squads reloading ahead of the upcoming season, all eyes are set to on the Lone Star Showdown in the final week of the regular season.

Not only is the matchup expected to dominate that weekend's slate, On3's Crain & Cone ranked it as the most anticipated clash of the entire SEC schedule.

"You can make a very, very legitimate case that this game…has been one of the most consequential in all of college football," remarked host Jake Crain.

It is a matchup that will undoubtedly affect the SEC standings and CFP hunt, but beyond that it is a pivotal point in the latest chapter of the storied showdown.

For Texas, it is a chance to flaunt total control again over a team that tried so desperately to escape from its reaches. Meanwhile, the Aggies are looking to prove that they are not destined to live in the shadow of its greatest tormentor and truly begin a new era of Texas A&M football.

Texas may have the recent fortunes, but the Aggies have shown that they will not ever back down from a fight with the Longhorns, even if it does not go their way. And Texas A&M will need all the gusto it can muster alongside the full effect of the 12th Man in Kyle Field in one of the biggest editions of the Lone Star Showdown.
