Clemson may have found itself in the driver’s seat for one of the nation’s most productive young quarterbacks.

On3 recruiting analyst Sam Spiegelman has entered an expert prediction for the Tigers to land 2028 Texas quarterback Trey Wright, providing Clemson with positive momentum in a recruitment that continues to gain attention. The projection came the same day Wright announced a list of 12 finalists that also features Oregon, Michigan, Kentucky, SMU, Florida State, Houston, Missouri, Kansas State, Arizona, TCU and North Carolina.

While recruiting rankings still list Wright as a three-star prospect, his production tells a much different story. The Lone Star High School standout exploded during his sophomore season, accounting for nearly 6,000 yards of offense and helping lead the Rangers to the UIL 5A Division I state championship game.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound quarterback completed 67 percent of his throws for 4,062 yards with 38 touchdown passes and just seven interceptions. He also made a major impact with his legs, rushing 163 times for 1,798 yards and another 16 touchdowns.

His numbers stacked up with anyone in the country. Wright finished the year with 5,860 total yards from scrimmage, the highest mark nationally. His passing total ranked 19th in the country and second among quarterbacks in the 2028 class, while his rushing output placed eighth among Texas quarterbacks.

That breakout season came one year after Wright was still playing junior varsity football. As a freshman, he piled up 2,113 total yards and 49 touchdowns while helping Lone Star capture a district championship. His development accelerated quickly after that, and a busy offseason camp schedule helped him collect his first Division I scholarship offers from North Texas, Sacramento State, UTSA, Texas State and Cincinnati before eventually earning the varsity starting job.

The recognition followed shortly after. Wright was named the unanimous District 5-5A MVP, Dallas All-Area Newcomer of the Year and earned MaxPreps All-American honors for his performance.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Wright is currently rated as the No. 369 overall player in the 2028 class, the No. 28 quarterback nationally and the No. 45 prospect in Texas. If Spiegelman’s prediction proves accurate, Clemson could be well on its way to securing one of the fastest-rising quarterbacks in the cycle.
