It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Jeremiah Smith is already collecting preseason awards. The Ohio State superstar has been named the Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year by the media, according to Cleveland.com, further cementing his status as the conference’s biggest star entering the 2026 season. Oregon quarterback Dante Moore finished second in the voting, while Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin came in third.

“Smith is set to enter what is expected to be his final season of college football with the Scarlet and Gray. Over two seasons, Smith has 163 receptions for 2,558 yards and 27 touchdowns. With at least one more year to play, Smith ranks seventh in receptions, eighth in receiving yards and fifth in touchdown catches in Ohio State history.”
Ohio State’s offense is loaded with star power, but Smith remains the centerpiece. His combination of size, speed, body control, and elite ball skills makes him nearly impossible to defend one-on-one. Defensive coordinators know he’s getting the football, yet slowing him down has proven to be a different challenge entirely.
In a recent ranking, Smith and Sayin were ranked as the best QB-WR duo in the league, and Ohio State as the third-best offense in the country in another ranking.
The preseason recognition is nice, but the ultimate goal is bringing another national championship to Columbus. If he performs the way everyone expects, individual accolades will continue to pile up. And judging by this latest honor, the college football world fully expects Jeremiah Smith to remain the sport’s brightest star throughout his junior season.
