The Oklahoma Sooners are entering into a prove-it year under head coach Brent Venables. The Sooners went an abysmal 6-7 in Year 1 in the SEC in 2024, but responded with a strong 10-3 season in Year 2 and a College Football Playoff berth.
Now, the Sooners must prove that the 2025 season was not a fluke. They'll have a great chance to do that. The Sooners return a ton of talent on a loaded defense that carried them to the College Football Playoff. Players like linebackers Owen Heinecke and Kip Lewis, defensive linemen Taylor Wein, David Stone and Jayden Jackson, and defensive backs Peyton and Eli Bowen and Courtland Guillory.
On top of that, they return quarterback John Mateer, running backs Xavier Robinson and Tory Blaylock, receiver Isaiah Sategna and four of five starting offensive linemen. That's got Oklahoma legend Gabe Ikard to believe on "The Oklahoma Breakdown with Ikard and Lehman" that this is the best roster Venables has had.
"I'm just sitting here, and I think this is going to be Brent Venables' best team," Ikard said. "I think it's going to be the best roster he's had. But respect is earned, not given."
Oklahoma has spent the last four years rebuilding its roster to compete at the highest level in the SEC. With veteran leadership on both sides of the ball and one of the nation's deepest defenses, expectations have never been higher under Venables.
As Ikard noted, however, talent alone is not enough. The Sooners now have to earn the respect that comes with turning potential into championships.
