SEC Network analyst Roman Harper went on News 9 and had some very positive things to say about the Oklahoma Sooners.

Harper, who played at Alabama from 2002-2005 and has been on SEC Nation since 2020, didn’t hold back when talking about his thoughts on this year’s team.

"I can go on and on about you guys and this defense," Harper told News 9. "I love this team. I'm a really big fan of Oklahoma. I think they're a team that has an opportunity to be in the SEC championship this year. I said that earlier, and I still stand by those words. I really, really like this team. The schedule is going to be tough."

That’s high praise coming from a guy who knows what championship-caliber teams look like.

Harper didn’t stop there either. He went on to say that not only can Oklahoma compete for a spot in Atlanta, but they can actually win the SEC title as well.

That’s a big statement. If you can win the league in today’s SEC, you’re right there in the conversation for the national championship.

Harper is clearly a fan of the defense. He kept coming back to how strong that side of the ball looks with guys like David Stone, Taylor Wein, Kip Lewis, Owen Heinecke, and the Bowen brothers all back. That unit carried the team at times last year, and with more experience it could be one of the best in the country.

The schedule is no joke. Oklahoma opens with a brutal stretch — Michigan on the road, then Georgia, then Texas in the Red River Shootout. If the Sooners can split those first three tough games and go 2-1, they put themselves in position to make a run.

Winning one of those against Georgia or Texas would be huge for momentum and resume building, putting them right in the thick of the SEC Championship race.

Mateer being healthy is the biggest key on offense. If he can play like he did early last season and cut down on mistakes, the weapons around him (Sategna, the new transfers, and the tight ends) should make this offense dangerous. The offensive line is another year older too, which should help the run game improve.

Harper’s comments carry weight because he’s seen a lot of good teams up close. For him to say Oklahoma has a real chance to not only make the SEC Championship but win it shows how much respect the program is earning after last year’s playoff appearance.

It’s not just fan talk anymore — national analysts are starting to buy in.

Of course, nothing is guaranteed. The SEC is loaded again this year from top to bottom. But the Sooners have the talent, the experience, and now some momentum. If they can stay healthy and play complementary football, they absolutely have the pieces to make a run at Atlanta.

Roman Harper saying he loves this team and believes they can win the SEC is the kind of validation OU fans have been waiting for, after being picked seventh in the SEC Preseason Media Poll.

It’s still early, but the buzz is real. Fall camp is right around the corner, and expectations are rising in Norman.
