SEC Football: Ranking the Conference's 16 Teams Into Tiers for 2026

With the start of college football’s 2026 season less than 35 days away, it’s time to rank SEC teams into tiers of conference title and playoff favorites, wild card contenders, and teams expected to fight for bowl eligibility. Georgia and Texas are the SEC's preseason favorites, but the next tier of teams — Oklahoma, Texas A&M, LSU and Ole Miss — isn't far behind. Additionally, Alabama and Tennessee project as top-25 teams, with an intriguing group of programs in Florida, South Carolina, Missouri and Auburn up next.
How many teams could join Georgia and Texas on the top tier this season? And how many playoff teams could the SEC realistically get into the 12-team field? With the switch to nine conference games, the path to a SEC title or playoff spot is only getting harder in '26.
Using projected 138 team rankings by Athlon Sports for the '26 season, let’s rank the SEC into tiers.

Georgia (No. 2 in Athlon's projected 138 team rankings for 2026)
Texas (No. 3)
It’s a close call between Georgia and Texas for the No. 1 spot in the SEC, but a slight edge goes to coach Kirby Smart’s team. The Bulldogs have won all three meetings between these two programs since the Longhorns joined the SEC, including a 35-10 victory in Athens last season.
With 14 returning starters, Georgia brings back a ton of experience and roster talent for a deep College Football Playoff run. Quarterback Gunner Stockton needs to take a step forward, and more playmakers must emerge in the passing game for the Bulldogs to win it all.
High expectations surrounded Texas last preseason, but coach Steve Sarkisian’s team fell short by missing the playoff. Lofty expectations are back in 2026. However, the Longhorns are better positioned for a run at the national title. Quarterback Arch Manning closed ’25 on a tear, and Sarkisian upgraded the offensive line and supporting cast. Auburn transfer Cam Coleman should be among the nation’s top playmakers at receiver. Additionally, Sarkisian took a big swing at upgrading the defense by hiring Will Muschamp as coordinator.

This tier showcases the depth of the SEC. Six teams outside of Georgia and Texas should be playoff contenders, including four — Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Ole Miss and Alabama — that earned a spot in the 12-team field last season.
The Sooners and Aggies are both projected to repeat their postseason appearance in Athlon’s preseason 12-team playoff field. However, both programs have significant question marks to address. Will Oklahoma’s offense take a big step forward with a healthy John Mateer returning at quarterback? How will the Aggies reload with four new starters on the offensive line? Quarterback Marcel Reed also needs to elevate his play in the big games.
LSU’s progression under new coach Lane Kiffin is one of the biggest storylines in the SEC this fall. His old program — Ole Miss — returns one of the nation’s top quarterbacks in Trinidad Chambliss and Athlon Sports’ first-team All-American running back Kewan Lacy. If the Rebels can navigate a challenging schedule and improve on defense, another deep playoff run is within reach.
Alabama has a pair of intriguing quarterbacks in Keelon Russell and Austin Mack vying to replace Ty Simpson. However, the Crimson Tide must get tougher at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and jumpstart a rushing attack that managed only 2.9 yards per carry in SEC play last season.
Tennessee made the College Football Playoff in ’24 but took a step back to 8-5 last season. Coach Josh Heupel made significant changes to the program to pursue another spot in the 12-team field. Veteran coordinator Jim Knowles is tasked with improving the defense, and there’s plenty of optimism about the development of true freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon.

Florida (No. 26)
South Carolina (No. 28)
Missouri (No. 29)
Auburn (No. 34)
It wouldn’t be a surprise to see at least one of these teams contend for a playoff spot if things break right this season.
Roster talent wasn’t an issue for former coach Billy Napier at Florida. How fast can new coach Jon Sumrall mold this roster into one that can contend for double-digit victories and a playoff spot? Having running back Jadan Baugh should shorten that transition period.
South Carolina nearly made the College Football Playoff in 2024 but regressed to 4-8 last season. Coach Shane Beamer had arguably one of the top offseasons in the SEC by convincing quarterback LaNorris Sellers to return this fall and hiring Kendal Briles as the team’s new offensive coordinator. If the Gamecocks hold up along the offensive line, a return to the top 25 is a realistic expectation.
Missouri running back Ahmad Hardy is on the mend after suffering a gunshot wound to his leg in May. If Hardy quickly regains his form and the Tigers reload a defense returning zero starters, coach Eli Drinkwitz’s team should find itself in the top 25 again. But if Missouri is going to make its first playoff trip, quarterback Austin Simmons has to develop quickly under new play-caller Chip Lindsey.
Expect Auburn to have a much-improved offense under new coach Alex Golesh, especially with a handful of former players — including star quarterback Byrum Brown — following him from South Florida. Coordinator DJ Durkin should keep the defense near the top of the SEC.

Mississippi State (No. 44)
Vanderbilt (No. 45)
Mississippi State reached a bowl last season as a five-win team, but coach Jeff Lebby’s squad could surprise in ’26. Quarterback Kamario Taylor is primed for a breakout year, and the defense is expected to improve with former Mississippi State head coach Zach Arnett returning to coordinate that unit.
Diego Pavia will be missed at Vanderbilt, but five-star true freshman quarterback Jared Curtis will help coach Clark Lea keep the momentum going in Nashville.

Kentucky (No. 49)
Arkansas (No. 55)
Optimism is running high at Kentucky, but new coach Will Stein faces one of the conference’s toughest schedules. Notre Dame transfer quarterback Kenny Minchey is promising, and Stein landed a trio of transfers to solidify the offensive line. That combination should help the Wildcats show steady progress throughout ’26.
Arkansas is rebuilding under new coach Ryan Silverfield. The Razorbacks brought in nearly 80 new players after going 2-10 last season. The Hogs also face one of the nation’s toughest schedules.
