Stepping onto the Big Ten Media Days stage as the new head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions, Matt Campbell reflected on a lifetime spent within the conference's footprint and expressed profound humility about his new post.
"I couldn't be more humbled and grateful to be here representing Penn State, our university, our athletic department and our football program, the history, the legacy we represent," Campbell shared, honoring a storied tradition spanning over 139 years of football and nearly 950 victories. Campbell praised the visionary leadership of University President Bendapudi and Athletic Director Pat Kraft, noting their shared commitment to building a football program rooted in integrity, character, and excellence.
Outlining his core coaching philosophy, Campbell emphasized that sustainable success is bred through rigorous cultural alignment and trust, stating, "At Penn State, we choose a culture to do what is hard rather than what is easy, and we want people who want something more than just winning football games."
Addressing tactical and staff developments in State College, Campbell highlighted the marquee hiring of defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn.

Explaining the rationale behind shifting away from his trademark defensive scheme to a base four-down front, Campbell pointed to Lynn's deep Big Ten experience and understanding of what it takes to stop modern pro-style offenses.
Furthermore, Campbell emphasized that retaining assistant coach Terry Smith was an absolute imperative, praising Smith's steady leadership in guiding the program through adversity at the conclusion of the previous season.
Accompanied in Chicago by player representatives Anthony Donkoh, Iowa State transfer quarterback Rocco Becht, and linebacker Tony Rojas, Campbell emphasized that these seniors embody the unwavering dedication required to propel the Nittany Lions forward.
