The official College Football Preseason Coaches Poll has come out, and the teams that did not receive any votes seem to be just as controversial as some of the teams that did receive votes.
The Tulane Green Wave is one such program that finds itself without a single vote, despite the fact that the team won the American Conference Championship and earned a spot in the College Football Playoff. It's a bit of a shock, especially considering the fact that in addition to the Top 25, 30 other teams received at least one vote. Are there really 55 FBS teams that are better than Tulane?
Here's a look at the complete Preseason Coaches Poll.
1. Ohio State Buckeyes
2. Oregon Ducks
3. Georgia Bulldogs
4. Texas Longhorns
5. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
6. Indiana Hoosiers
7. Miami Hurricanes
8. Texas A&M Aggies
9. Oklahoma Sooners
10. Ole Miss Rebels
11. Alabama Crimson Tide
12. Texas Tech Red Raiders
13. LSU Tigers
14. USC Trojans
15. BYU Cougars
16. Michigan Wolverines
17. Penn State Nittany Lions
18. Tennessee Volunteers
19. Washington Huskies
20. SMU Mustangs
21. Utah Utes
22. Iowa Hawkeyes
23. Clemson Tigers
24. Houston Cougars
25. Missouri Tigers
Others receiving votes: Louisville Cardinals (153), Florida Gators (147), TCU Horned Frogs (63), Illinois Fighting Illini (62), South Carolina Gamecocks (50), Arizona Wildcats (50), Virginia Cavaliers (40), Vanderbilt Commodores (37), Auburn Tigers (29), Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (26), Boise State Broncos (24), Oklahoma State Cowboys (22), UNLV Rebels (17), NC State Wolfpack (13), Florida State Seminoles (13), Virginia Tech Hokies (12), Nebraska Cornhuskers (12), Memphis Tigers (9), Arizona State Sun Devils (8), James Madison Dukes (6), Duke Blue Devils (6), Pittsburgh Panthers (4), New Mexico Lobos (4), Western Michigan Broncos (3), Navy Midshipmen (3), San Diego State Aztecs (2), Kansas State Wildcats (1), Jacksonville State Gamecocks (1), Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (1), California Golden Bears (1)
Interestingly enough, the Florida Gators were not far out of the Top 25 themselves. It sure seems like voters are quick to jump to the idea that Sumrall's coaching abilities far outweighed Tulane's on-field talent last year… even though the Green Wave has been successful for years.
As a whole, the American Conference was poorly represented. Memphis received nine votes to lead the way for the league, and Navy earned three votes. Though there's been some coaching turnover within the American in the offseason, the conference doesn't seem to have taken that big of a step back.
The Olive Green and Sky Blue will have a chance to prove itself pretty quickly. Two of its first three opponents — Duke and Kansas State — received preseason votes. Make some noise in those games, and the Green Wave will earn some respect.
