College football analyst names most hated fan base in 2026

The college football season is just weeks away from Week 0’s kickoff. The quest for the College Football Playoff will begin as teams look to dethrone the Indiana Hoosiers. Indiana was an easy team to pull for as it completed its incredible journey to the program’s first national championship.

Hoosiers faithful haven’t experienced this kind of success in football. The closest they’ve come is through their men’s soccer and men’s basketball teams. They are a respected fan base, but not every college football fan base receives the same treatment. In fact, some are, frankly, hated.

EasySportz named its top 10 most hated college football fan bases of 2026. One might think the top spot would belong to Alabama, Georgia, or even Texas. Instead, Tennessee Volunteers fans received that honor.

“Nobody becomes more confident after a few wins than Tennessee fans. The Vols have one of the loudest and most passionate fanbases in the country, but that’s also what makes them so obnoxious. Tennessee hasn’t accumulated the modern championship hardware of Alabama or Georgia, yet its fans can talk like they’ve been running the SEC for years. Win something first. Then talk.” reporter Landon Kardian wrote.

Why the hate for Rocky Top?

There is no denying that Tennessee has one of the most passionate fan bases in college football. Neyland Stadium routinely provides one of the loudest environments in the sport, and the Vols’ orange is nearly impossible to miss on Saturdays.

That passion, however, can quickly turn into frustration for opposing fan bases. Tennessee fans have high expectations for their program, and the confidence that comes with playing in the SEC can sometimes rub opposing fans the wrong way.

The Vols also have one of the most recognizable traditions in college football. From “Rocky Top” echoing throughout Neyland Stadium to the sea of orange filling the stands to the checkerboard end zones, Tennessee has built a distinctive identity that follows the program wherever it goes.

Of course, being one of the most hated fan bases isn’t necessarily an insult. In college football, being hated often means a program matters. Fans don’t spend much time worrying about teams they don’t care about, and Tennessee certainly doesn’t fall into that category.

The Volunteers have also spent years competing in one of the most competitive conferences in the country. That creates plenty of opportunities for rivalries, disagreements and fan-base clashes. They are aiming to get back into the CFP in 2026 after falling short in 2025.
