The LSU football program is less than a month away from kicking off its 2026 season, which will be its first under new head coach Lane Kiffin. Also making his LSU debut will be quarterback Sam Leavitt, who transferred over from Arizona State this offseason and will look to get it done on the SEC level.
However, not everyone is convinced that Leavitt has what it takes to lead LSU back into contention.
Recently, an anonymous SEC defensive coordinator spoke on why he isn’t overly concerned about Leavitt this season.

“He’s not the talent level that a normal LSU quarterback would be,” said the defensive coordinator, per Adam Rittenberg of ESPN. “If they [have success], it’s going to be because they got him going in the system. He doesn’t freak you out when you watch him, but he is dangerous at times. I would rather play him than Diego Pavia.”
Of course, the coordinator didn’t put his name to the quote, so Leavitt won’t know whether or not he will have the chance to prove them wrong head-to-head this season. However, it will still add plenty of fuel to the fire for a quarterback looking to prove that LSU made the right decision by pursuing him in the transfer portal.
Each of the last two national champion quarterbacks, Fernando Mendoza of Indiana and Will Howard of Ohio State, was a transfer in their first season with their new respective programs, and Leavitt will look to add his name to that exclusive list this season in Baton Rouge.
The Tigers are slated to get their new season underway on September 5 with a marquee home game against Clemson in prime time.
