Watch Curt Cignetti break down Indiana football film: 'This is what I love to do'

Get a peek at Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti's happy place as he breaks down video with ESPN's Rece Davis in his Bloomington office.

If you're ready for about a half-hour of play-stop-rewind on multiple plays from IU's national championship season, and some from incoming Hoosiers quarterback Josh Hoover, then grab your popcorn and settle in.

Cignetti breaks down several critical plays made by Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza, comparing two in particular: a pass to Elijah Sarratt that beat Oregon, and Mendoza's fourth-down touchdown run in the title game against Miami. The formations look similar, but Cignetti offers details that differentiate them.

In the play against Oregon, Cignetti said getting the ball "up and down" was critical. What's that mean? "Ball velocity. The less time it's in the air, the better chance you have for a completion."

Against Miami, "This is a run look all the way. Now, the only difference in the blocking pattern is the running back's to the field and we're sending the center to the left guard."

Once Mendoza gets hit at about the 5-yard line, "This is just all will. I mean, competitive grit, toughness right here. 'I'm going to find a way to get it done.' It's a great play him."

Cignetti also digs into the following people and issues:

• Charlie Becker's emergence when Sarratt when out with an injury midseason.
• IU defensive players Aiden Fisher and Elijah Hardy.
• A key defensive play against Alabama in the Rose Bowl.
• A play he recalled from his Indiana-Pennsylvania days that helped IU last season.

He concludes with what he's doing with all that time he spends watching tape of his team and opponents.

"I'm always looking for an edge, something that will help us get better. And I want to increase my knowledge as a football coach. … There's no doubt in my mind that what I do in here has helped us get better.

"We probably do things a little different than most people, but I don't want to waste people's time. I hated, growing up, when people wasted my time. I don't want to waste the coaches' time.

"This is what I love to do. I don't golf anymore. I don't jog. I don't hunt, ski, fish. I like that I'm a football coach. … I'm a little more of a CEO than a football coach."
