Georgia Receives Title Expectations for One Reason Not Many are Discussing

The Georgia Bulldogs are headed into the regular season under as much pressure to win a title as they have been since first getting it done in 2021 under head coach Kirby Smart.

Undeniably, Smart has established this program as one of the best in the nation, but with that comes an expectation that year in and year out a championship should be the standard. Georgia has fallen short of that the last three years and been eliminated early in the postseason for the last two, which has the discourse going at how they can get things back to that standard.

One reason they should be considered a title favorite though is the inexperience of last year's roster after playing a ton of young players in 2025. During a recent ESPN segment, Booger McFarland argued that those same guys having that experience, despite it causing some growing pains, is a reason they could win a title this year.

McFarland Loves Experience on Georgia's Roster This Year

"Everybody kept asking what was wrong with Georgia, they were just a young football team," McFarland began. "That youth now is gonna grow up. They've got a veteran quarterback…I think the defense is gonna be outstanding…they have a lot of young players they played on defense and they got better during the season. I expect them to pick up where they left off…If that defense is what they used to be, then it’s gonna be tough for anybody to beat Georgia."

While it's not necessarily a definitive selection of Georgia to win a national title, McFarland makes some great points on the young and exciting nature of what this defense can be this year.

Guys like Ellis Robinson IV and Elijah Griffin who started to show their future potential last season have the chance to step up and not just become full time starters, but legitimate superstars as well.

Collectively, the Bulldogs have one of the most high ceiling group of defenders in the nation, and now that so many of them got some valuable experience last year, the sky could be the limit for them to take off in 2026.

Georgia has not had a truly elite defense since 2021, but it feels like this year's group has the chance to be exactly that, and a ton of it has to do with experience. If guys across the unit can indeed take that next step, the Bulldogs are going to have a real chance to get back where they belong.
