Anonymous SEC coordinators discuss Marcel Reed's strengths, weaknesses

Texas A&M's future quarterback dilemma after Marcel Reed, who is entering his second full starting season, departs the program over the next two offseasons, is something coach Mike Elko and his staff aren't worried about at the moment, as the redshirt junior has put in the work this offseason, improving his accuracy and touch, with a primary focus on eliminating the mental mistakes that contributed to last season's back-to-back losses to Texas and Miami in the first round of the College Football Playoff.

During Monday's fifth preseason practice, Reed threw several impressive passes, including one of the best throws we've seen from the Tennessee native to junior Mario Craver while escaping pressure. Overall, the starting signal-caller is on the right track towards his best season yet, even after throwing for a career-high 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns, while his 12 interceptions should be cut down if this offseason improvement continues.

Among the other 15 SEC quarterbacks, Marcel Reed is widely considered a top 10-ranked starter, as high as fifth and as low as eighth. Based on recent comments from ESPN, which cited several anonymous SEC coaches, the perception of Reed as a "high variance" quarterback has yet to be challenged, especially in a conference with quarterbacks such as Arch Manning and Gunner Stockton, Trinidad Chambliss, and, now, Sam Leavitt.

First and foremost, Mike Elko, entering his third season at the helm, continued to back his quarterback, who, as I stated above, has ignored his various critics and continued to put in the work on the field.

"His goal is to lead this team to a championship and be an NFL draft pick," Mike Elko stated to ESPN. "He's very, very comfortable with where we're at right now with the scheme stuff. Last offseason, I was dealing with people asking me if he would be able to complete a forward pass, and I tried to convince everyone that he would, and now there's a thought that he's hit his ceiling, but I still think there's a ton of growth for him, and he's committed to doing that."

Against top-35-ranked defenses last season, Marcel Reed threw just six touchdowns and eight of his twelve interceptions, including four interceptions in both losses to Texas and Miami, spurring one SEC defensive coordinator to state that "you've got to do a good job of confusing," when discussing Reed's ability to make plays with his legs and keep defenses on their toes.

Another SEC defensive coordinator noted that Reed struggled last season against more complex zone coverage looks and top-tier run defenses, while another defensive coordinator may have provided Mike Elko and QB coach Joey Lynch an edge after revealing the mindset he hopes Reed enters the 2026 season with.

"He still thinks he's a true quarterback, and we want him to, like, keep thinking that way. He doesn't really want to run, but when he does, it's the scariest part."

Getting back to his true dual-threat persona won't just open up passing lanes for his wide receivers, but keep every opposing defense honest and allow first-year OC Holmon Wiggins to get creative late in the season.
