After Lane Kiffin took the head coach job at LSU football, he took a bold approach at recruiting in the transfer portal to rebuild the purple and gold program. Finding an experienced quarterback was among the top concerns and Kiffin signed the portal's top passer in Sam Leavitt.
The Tigers almost missed on Leavitt entirely after he left his visit to Baton Rouge without signing. Kiffin flew to Tennessee to meet with Leavitt for a second time after his visit with Tennessee. Leavitt reflected on the process that brought him to LSU amid his first fall camp.
"He definitely did some great tactics from his side and [I] ultimately made the decision to come here so that all worked out," Leavitt said. "Building the relationship with the guys upstairs in the office, I think they really see my passion for the game and I see theirs."
Leavitt said this is "the hardest working staff" he's ever been around. The coaches poured into him throughout his recovery process from a foot injury and the redshirt junior notices the mutual commitment to hard work.
"It's just a blessing for me to be held accountable in that way and just constantly grind," Leavitt said. "It's been a grind since I got here in January, so just being around them and them seeing my work ethic and me seeing theirs, I think the relationship just blossoms from there."
