Clemson HC Dabo Swinney Admits Roster Lacks Star Power

Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney will deflect to his resume when questioned about the program's future after a 7-6 season in 2025. What he won't do is sell the 2026 team as anything better than predicted on paper.

College coaches ranked Clemson at No. 23 in their preseason poll. In prior years, that would have been a disappointment for a program that was used to being the top school in the ACC. 

This year, Miami is expected to win the conference with Louisville and SMU right behind. The Tigers are an afterthought as they replace nine players that went to the 2026 draft and have a quarterback battle between Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds. 

During his news conference on Tuesday, Swinney told reporters he didn't see any standout during training camp. He's working with a bunch of "nobodies" this summer.

"No. Everybody's just working," Swinney said, via TigerNet. "There's a bunch of nobodies. We'll see. We'll see if anybody becomes somebody as we play some games."

While he's keeping his notes tight to his chest, Swinney said his players and staff are buying into the system.

"They're doing what we need them to do right now," Swinney said. "So we've got a long way to go. The staff has done a nice job, really good organization. But we're just in the process of trying to get ready to play a football game. That's just where we are. 

"So, again, it's a lot of install, a lot of walk it, you talk it, you hear it, you see it, you go do it, then you study and review, and then you go at it again. So long days, but, man, I love this time of year because it's just all ball."

The Tigers will need some of their players to develop into playmakers quickly. Clemson will have no tune-up games before traveling to play LSU in Week 1. 

Swinney knew in the offseason that he'd be judged by how he put together his roster. He chose to go with less ego, but his competition doesn't care if they're lining up against nice guys in a system.
