Michigan Wolverines tight end Zack Marshall apologized Tuesday after text messages from him criticizing offensive coordinator Jason Beck were leaked on social media, following the Wolverines' 20-14 loss to Minnesota.
The Michigan football program has endured a turbulent 10 months under new coach Kyle Whittingham, and the frustration inside the program appears to be boiling over. The turmoil began with the firing of head coach Sherrone Moore after an inappropriate relationship with a staffer came to light. The situation escalated months later when Moore was arrested on stalking and home invasion charges. He ultimately accepted a plea bargain in the spring.
Michigan's ensuing coaching search was rocky, but the program eventually landed Whittingham, hiring him away from Utah. His tenure, however, has gotten off to a disastrous start. Whittingham's first game produced an ugly win, and Michigan has struggled even more since, going winless in Big Ten play and falling out of the national rankings.
The Wolverines' problems have extended to the offense, where former five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood has struggled to live up to expectations. His performance has become a growing concern, with questions emerging about whether Michigan should consider benching him.
Now, frustration among the players is becoming public.
Marshall, a senior tight end who was part of Jim Harbaugh's 2023 national championship team, expressed his displeasure with Beck in a private group chat that leaked. Marshall alleged that Beck told the team's tight ends that none of them were valuable to the offense and added that "this offense sucks." With Michigan ranking 105th nationally in points per game, the criticism has struck a nerve. After the screenshots spread, Marshall took responsibility for his comments and apologized on X.

Marshall caught 16 passes for 199 yards last season but has yet to record a reception in five games under Whittingham and Beck.
Michigan now enters its bye week with plenty to fix. When the Wolverines return, they will host Penn State in a matchup between two of the Big Ten's most disappointing teams—and one that could reveal just how deep Michigan's problems have become.
