With the 2026 college football season completing its fifth week, the campaign has unearthed a lot of positive talent, with new names giving established players a run for their money every single week.
Out of the many players who have made a mark this season, Oregon State Beavers wide receiver Jesse Legree has become a favorite in the collegiate football fraternity thanks to his consistent play throughout the first five weeks.
Legree’s breakout season prompted former Oregon State Beavers wide receiver Chad Johnson, a six-time NFL Pro Bowler, to rave about him on Tuesday, comparing the freshman to Heisman Trophy favorite Jeremiah Smith of Ohio State.
“We’re hooping and hollering about a very good friend of mine in Jeremiah Smith. But Jesse Legree is right there If you look at the numbers. He’s right there, and he’s quietly having a time at OSU. So, I’m happy for him. I hope he stays at OSU despite all the –you already know what’s coming — especially in this day and age where college football is now a business. He’s awesome man. he’s awesome,” Johnson said in an interview with reporter John Canzano (0:09).
With three wins in a row, the Oregon State Beavers (3-2, 1-0 Pac-12), with wide receiver Jesse Legree, will host the San Diego State Aztecs (2-3, 1-0) on Saturday at Reser Stadium in Oregon.
How Has WR Jesse Legree Fared So Far This Season?
One of the primary reasons behind veteran wide receiver Chad Johnson singing praises of OSU’s breakout wideout Jesse Legree is his output and statistics this season.
In five games, Legree has recorded 28 receptions for 741 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 26.5 yards per reception. To put things in perspective, Legree currently occupies the second spot on ESPN’s player receiving stats for the 2026 college football season, with Buckeyes star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith occupying the top spot, hence the Johnson comparison.
As Chad Johnson hoped in his Tuesday interview that Legree continues to play for the Oregon State Beavers, the prolific stats will only garner the attention of more and more teams in the future.
