The trailer for Tyler Perry’s next chapter of “Why Did I Get Married” is out, and this time, a destination wedding is causing everyone to take a closer look at their own marriages.
The Netflix-produced “Why Did I Get Married Again?” follows the crew in Italy as they celebrate the wedding of Angela (Tasha Smith) and Marcus’s (Michael Jai White) daughter, Jasmine (Armani Greer).
The returning cast also includes Perry as Terry and Sharon Leal as his wife, Diane, Richard T. Jones as Mike, Jill Scott as Sheila, and Lamman Rucker as Troy.
Taraji P. Henson, who has starred in Perry films like “I Can Do Bad All By Myself,” “Acrimony” and “The Family That Preys,” is joining the cast in the role of Roselyn, a friend of the group and the mother of the groom, Wesley, played by Everett Osborne. Speaking to USA TODAY about the Henson’s character, Perry said Roselyn’s “point of view comes from a woman who raised her son practically by herself and there is a lot of resentment for the way some of that was done.”
Henson intially shared she was joining the franchise in July, writing on Instagram, “Roselyn has entered the chat.”
In this new installment, Jasmine’s wedding to Wesley sparks conflict as her father Marcus and others involved disapprove of the union. As they start to reflect on how they raised their children, the longtime friend group is forced to interrogate whether their own marriages are as perfect as they appear.
“What happens with me is that I write and let the characters speak,” Perry told USA TODAY. “As I’m getting older and they are getting older, our lives are changing.”
He added that the film will reflect “our personal experiences in raising children and aging parents. That lends itself to all of these characters having a lot more to say, so they dictated that it was time to tell the story.“
“Why Did I Get Married Again?” will be released on Netflix on Sept. 9.
