Here's how iconic Georgia football assistant Erk Russell is being recognized

Georgia football is recognizing a legendary assistant coach from its past by naming an area in Sanford Stadium for him.

The program’s lettermen club will now be called ‘The Coach Erk Russell Football Lettermen’s Club,” for the coach established the culture of ‘Junkyard Dawgs; defenses.

The change was approved by the University System Board of Regents at its meeting on Thursday Aug. 13. The lettermen’s club is located on the east end of the stadium off East Campus Road.

The naming was made in recognition of his lasting contributions to the school for a person who described to the Board of Regents as “a highly regarded figure in UGA football history.”

Russell was defensive coordinator at Georgia under Vince Dooley from 1964 through the national championship season of 1980, winning four SEC championships during his time. He was known for headbutting players in warmups.

“His innovative coaching, ability to motivate student-athletes, and commitment to excellence left a lasting imprint on the football program and the university,” the board’s agenda item said.

Russell went on to become head coach at Georgia Southern from 1982-89, winning three I-AA titles after resurrecting the program. He died in 2006 at age 80.

The naming came after a a fund-raising campaign by Georgia and the Letterman's Club to recognize Russell.

“His accomplishments at both institutions demonstrated an exceptional ability to build successful programs and develop student-athletes,” the name change description said. “Widely respected for his leadership, mentorship, and impact on generations of student-athletes, Coach Russell’s legacy remains deeply intertwined with the history and tradition of UGA football. Naming the Club in his honor appropriately recognizes his extraordinary contributions to UGA, the football program, and collegiate athletics throughout the State of Georgia.”

All players, managers and trainers who earned a varsity letter members of the University of Georgia Lettermen's Club, group’s website said.
